Cambodia Phare Circus

“Better than any Cirque Du Soleil! You won’t be disappointed!

Incredible show. We laughed, we gasped, and we cheered! The artists are great athletes. The storyline was perfect and funny. The performance was the best circus we have ever seen – not even comparable to Cirque Du Soleil because it’s in a completely different league! The musicians were unbelievable, such talent. It’s the best show we have seen in Southeast Asia! And so reasonably priced. The street food served before the show was delicious, and the kids performing musical acts and dances to warm up the crowd were excellent. If you have a single thought to go to the show, book your tickets now, you won’t regret it! We got the cheapest tickets, and our view of the ring was perfect.”-Suz.

“A MUST SEE! This show rivals any theatre or circus performance I’ve seen anywhere in the world, a sort of Cambodian Cirque du Soleil that supports a great cause (if Cirque were performed in your living room, that is). Photos and video can’t do it justice because the show was an ongoing storytelling adventure that was captivating, moving, and comical.

The arena is small, with a semicircle of stadium-style seating, and all audience members are close enough to see facial expressions and nuanced gestures, close enough to feel the heat of the fire used in an act, close sufficient for performers to stick a landing (literally) at your feet.

The youngest children give a free pre-show performance about an hour before the scheduled arena show – in a quaint courtyard with a few food vendors & a bar. Every ticket supports the Phare Performing Arts school and helps these children care for themselves & their families.”- Kristie M.

More than just a circus, Phare performers use theatre, music, dance and modern circus arts to tell uniquely Cambodian stories: historical, folk and contemporary. The young circus artists will astonish you with their energy, emotion, enthusiasm and talent, making Phare Circus the top-rated evening entertainment in Siem Reap.

Phare artists are students and graduates from Phare Ponleu Selpak’s (www.phareps.org) vocational training centre in Battambang. The association was formed in 1994 by nine young men coming home from a refugee camp after the Khmer Rouge regime. They were greatly helped during that time by an art teacher using drawing classes as therapy, and they wanted to share this new skill among people experiencing poverty and socially deprived and troubled youngsters in Battambang. They founded an art school, and a public school followed to offer free education. A music school and theatre school were next, and finally, for the kids who wanted more, the circus school. Today, more than 1,200 pupils attend public schools daily, and 500 attend alternative schools. Phare Ponleu Selpak also has extensive outreach programs, trying to help with the problems highlighted in their tales.

Phare, The Cambodian Circus, offers these students and graduates somewhere to hone their skills and a place to earn a decent wage. Money that will take them out of poverty and give them self-respect and freedom.
