Sihanoukville
Sihanoukville
Sihanoukville province is a small southern province of Cambodia. The capital sits on a peninsula with beaches and tropical islands surrounding it. Sihanoukville, also known as Kampong Som or Kampong Saom, was established in 1964 as Cambodia’s only deep-water port. It is gradually being developed as a tourist attraction. However, despite the promise of massive Malaysian investment, such as a planned casino on Naga Island, tourist numbers still need to grow. Nevertheless, its beautiful sandy beaches and several paradise islands have made it a popular tourist destination.
The provincial capital was named Sihanoukville in honor of the king who fought for Cambodia’s independence. Located in the southwest corner of Cambodia, 232km from Phnom Penh, Sihanoukville can be reached via National Highway No 4. The city is beautified by white-sand beaches, including Ohchheuteal, Sokha, Pram Pi Chan, and Deum Chrey, known for their quiet, cozy atmosphere, large stretches of white sand, and clear waters. These beaches are popular spots for families on vacation. These seaside paradises can be enjoyed all year round with the refreshing coolness of the freshwater streams.
Business opportunities in Sihanoukville are varied, ranging from financial activities to tourist and travel-related industries. This aligns with the government’s objective of making Sihanoukville a major tourist destination and maintaining its status as an International Offshore Financial Centre. The government welcomes foreign and local investors to participate on a joint-venture basis.
This famous seaside resort is formed by wide, huge streets and significant new concrete buildings, which have lost any impression of the former architectural colonial style. As the town is spread across a wide area, hiring a motorbike is the best way to get around. Besides the lovely beaches and very nice vantage points, there is only so much to see in the town.
You can climb the small hill to Wat Leu to catch a nice view of the city. Wat Krom is another place of interest, a recently built pagoda that houses a sanctuary called Yeah Mao, the guardian of the coast. Nearby, there are excellent places for a detour, such as the Ream National Park and the beautiful Kbal Chhay Waterfall.
